Bill France Jr. - The Man Who
Made NASCAR
by Herb A. Branham
Former NASCAR president, chairman, and CEO Bill France Jr. is
remembered and revered as the man who followed his visionary father
at the helm of NASCAR, in the process becoming a visionary himself,
as he guided NASCAR to unprecedented levels of popularity. Bill Jr.
grew up in the formative years of stock car racing, living and
learning every detail of the sport from his own experiences, and
those of his father, NASCAR founder William Henry Getty France,
known as Bill Sr. or Big Bill. In Bill France Jr. - The Man Who Made
NASCAR, the life of Bill France Jr. is examined, starting with the
day in 1934 when his family arrived at the then-sleepy town of
Daytona Beach, Florida.
The biography covers Bill Jr.’s role in NASCAR’s formative years;
his assumption of the NASCAR presidency; the sport’s explosion in
popularity under his leadership; his courageous battle with cancer
throughout the last decade of his life; and his final role, as
NASCAR vice chairman and main advisor to NASCAR’s third-generation
leader, his son, Chairman/CEO Brian France. Bill Jr. combined
pragmatism with optimism, an approach that resulted in a calculated
and adventurous road to success for NASCAR. That approach was marked
always by an inimitable, colorful style now recalled as both
endearing and intimidating. Bill France Jr. - The Man Who Made NASCAR
gives the reader an insider’s look at a remarkable life.

THE BLOUNT REPORT
-
NASCAR’s
Most Overrated & Underrated Drivers, Cars, Teams,
and Tracks
by Terry Blount
While fans continue to debate the relative merits of their favorite
drivers, ESPN.com’s premier motor sports writer Terry Blount now
brings some needed clarity and perspective to America’s biggest
spectator sport, rating drivers, teams, cars, and tracks, and
“bluntly” lets readers know which are overrated and which are
underrated in a new book that’s bound to further the debate and stir
up more controversy.
It’s an all-fun but in-depth look at the opinionated discussions
fans have in their living rooms every weekend. Evaluating driver
skills is a whopping task, even for the most knowledgeable folks in
the sport. But Blount is one of the most qualified analysts, and
well up to the task of trying to separate fact from fiction,
reputation from reality, and equipment from talent.
Along with rating drivers, The Blount Report also rates a vast array
of the NASCAR world from speedways to races and rules to records.
It’s all up for debate. So fasten your seatbelt and enjoy…it may get
a bit bumpy along the way but it’s well worth the ride.
Hard cover, 240 pages.

Donnie Allison: As I Recall...

Allison with Jimmy Creed
Donnie Allison was always the "other" brother of the famous NASCAR
racing duo.
Overshadowed by Bobby, Donnie often did not get his due
for being an outstanding racer in his own right.
Many stories make
the rounds about Donnie Allison and often when they are re-told, the
circumstances aren’t related the way Donnie recalls them. That’s why
he wanted to do a book. "I’ve got lots of stories to tell, and I
want to tell them the way I remember them," Donnie says. Now he’s
done just that.

UMBRELLA MIKE:
The True Story of the Chicago Gangster Behind the Indy 500
by Brock Yates
Umbrella Mike is Michael Joseph Boyle, the corrupt leader of
Chicago’s most powerful union and on friendly terms with Al Capone.
Umbrella Mike was one of the few who could afford the luxury of
racing during the hardship of the Depression. In 1937, dogged by
adverse publicity and a barrage of disasters, the prestigious
Vanderbilt Cup was held on Long Island. This book remarkably
chronicles the dramatic events that unfolded during this most
controversial of races — pitting against one another a Nazi poster
child, a German-hating Swiss, and the brilliant American underdog
who has a trick or two up his sleeve.

Don Garlits, Rear Engine
Dragster
Part 1 - Part 2
by Mickey Bryant and Todd
Hutcheson
A journey through 18 months that made drag
racing history and ended with the launch of the rear engine dragster
(R.E.D.). If necessity was the mother of invention then its father
was creativity.
Probably the most talked-about two events in
drag racing history become the bookends of these two books. Part 1
opens with the race at Lions Drag Strip in Long Beach, California,
March 8th, 1970. Part 2 ends with the Indy Nationals, September 7th,
1971. The events of these historic two days are chronicled and
examined in detail, showing what really happened at the sport’s most
famous venues of the day and dispelling rumors and flat-out
misunderstandings about what happened there. These were also the
very first and last race by drag racing’s most revered rear engine
dragster – Don Garlits’ Swamp Rat 14.
Part 1 features the
March 1970 race that put Garlits in the hospital and on the
sideline. That race for him lasted only 40 feet. Part 1 ends right
where the secret build of the new R.E.D. is completed and the
Garlits Boys are packing up to head out West to showcase this new
design. This is a complete and stand-alone account of all that
happened in the year 1970.
Part 2 takes you through the
step-by-step account of this historic machine, Swamp Rat 14, and
ends with the 1971 Indy Nationals and Garlits’ astonishing elapsed
time that has lasted 40 years, and counting.

Echoes of
Thunder in the Hills
– Photographic Memories of 1960s Auto Racing in Southeastern Ohio
and Adjoining West Virginia
by Tony Martin
Echoes of Thunder in the Hills covers the history of auto racing
along the Ohio Valley from 1958 through 1972. The 262-page soft
cover book is printed on glossy stock, enhancing the more than 200
original photographs shot by two of the era/area's prominent racing
photographers. The story of the evolution from the old coupes and
sedans to today's sprint cars is conveyed largely through the many
photos and photo captions.
The book primarily focuses on Alma, OH’s Atomic Speedway (now K-C
Raceway), the old Portsmouth Speedway, the Ohio Valley Speedway, and
West Virginia International. Several others are depicted as well.
Featured are many of the local gendarmes who ruled the racing in the
area, week-in and out, along with such marauding mercenaries as Rick
Ferkel, Chuck Amati, Larry "Boom -Boom" Cannon, and Dick Gaines and
Carl Williams who both drove for legendary car owner Diz Wilson.
Readers will find photographs of the first-ever winged race car
driven by Columbus' Jim Cushman and Chuck Engel's unique six-wheeled
supermodiifed among the wide variety of racing concepts. Race cars
and race car parts were generally not store-bought – home-spun
ingenuity was the mode of operation for these racing pioneers.
Outspending the competition didn't always guarantee victory back in
the day.
The book's foreword was penned by Tom Schmeh, Curator of the
National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum. Schmeh was recently
named the "Outstanding Contributor to the Sport of Sprint Car
Racing.”
Soft cover, 262 pages.

He Crashed Me So I
Crashed
Him Back
by Mark Bechtel
On a cold February day in 1979, when most of the Northeast was
snowed in by a blizzard, NASCAR entered the American consciousness
with a dramatic telecast of the Daytona 500. It was the first
500-mile race to be broadcast live on national television and
featured the heroes and legends of the sport racing on a hallowed
track. With one of the wildest finishes in sports history–a finish
that was just the start of the drama–everything changed for what is
now America's second most popular sport.
He Crashed Me So I Crashed Him Back is the story of an
emerging sport trying to find its feet. It's the story of how Bobby
Allison, Donnie Allison, Cale Yarborough, Richard Petty, Dale
Earnhardt, Darrell Waltrip, A.J. Foyt, and Kyle Petty came together
in an unforgettable season that featured the first nationally
televised NASCAR races. There were rivalries–even the sibling
kind–and plenty of fistfights, feuds, and frenzied finishes.
Rollicking and full of larger-than-life characters, He Crashed
Me So I Crashed Him Back is the remarkable tale of the birth of
modern stock-car racing.
Soft cover, 320 pages.

THANKS: The Story of Rick
Mears and the Mears Gang
by Gordon Kirby
Through the eighties and into the early nineties he was known as the
King of the Speedways and the maestro of the Indianapolis Motor
Speedway. Rick Mears, the gentleman racer, won four Indianapolis
500s between 1979 and 1991, as well as three CART Indy car
championships, before retiring at the end of 1992 following a series
of injuries.
Originally from Kansas, Rick, his brother Roger, and his racer dad
Bill were known as the “Mears Gang” in Southern California sprint
buggy and off-road racing. Brother Roger went on to race Indy cars
for a few years before focusing his career on off-road racing, where
he was an extremely successful owner/driver.
The Mears Gang tradition carries on today with Roger’s son Casey
racing in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup. In Rick Mears • Thanks, veteran
racing writer Gordon Kirby, the U.S. editor of Motor Sport, tells
the whole story of Rocket Rick Mears and the Mears Gang’s journey

Racing the Heartland – A History of the Mississippi Valley Auto
Racing Association
by Ken Paulsen
This book is a joy.
It is the complete history – with records – of one of the lesser
known Midwest racing organizations, the MVARA (Mississippi Valley
Auto Racing Association). The group ran big cars/sprinters in eight
Midwestern states from 1946 through 1964, at times challenging the
more formidable IMCA for racing contracts.
Included are nationally known figures such as Jerry Blundy, Tom
Bigelow, Rocky Williams, and Pee Wee Wilson. There are photographs,
racing ads, stories, and race write-ups throughout. At the end is a
painstakingly researched tabulation of the record of each driver and
yearly schedules of races.
Must reading for all open wheel racing history buffs.

The Dirt Under the
Asphalt:
An Underground History of
Stock Car Racing
by Jack Flowers
Many other books have been written about NASCAR, mainly about its
drivers and other celebrities who compete in the sport of stock car
racing, but there have been very few books written or published
about the internal workings of NASCAR.
This book takes a look at NASCAR from day one to present-day and
presents the author’s perception of how NASCAR has maintained its
operation as a dictatorship since the late forties, how drugs played
a part in its rapid rise in popularity, and how it has been run by
the France family.
The Dirt under the Asphalt pulls no punches and paints no pretty
pictures. It does, however, offer the author’s insight into the most
prominent track owners and drivers who got NASCAR started and kept
it going through tough times in the fifties and sixties.
Jack Flowers covered his first stock car race when he was sixteen
and the sports editor of The Moultrie Observer (Georgia). Since
then, Flowers, now 70, has worked for 11 different daily newspapers
and auto racing trade publications that cover NASCAR. Today he still
writes weekly stories about NASCAR for Area Auto Racing News and
National Speed Sport News.

Along for the Ride—A

Stock Car Racing
By Larry Woody
In his own
words, Larry Woody, who has covered racing for over 30

and anecdotes about some of the most famous names in
racing. Highlights include the time Richard Petty almost
bought a race track, why Darrell Waltrip once wanted to
punch out some race fans, or the night that repo wrecker
driver-turned-NASCAR star Bobby Hamilton was attacked by
the owner of a car he was trying to tow away. What
prominent driver was the biggest pain to deal with? What
was the "afterlife" experience that NASCAR VP Jim Hunter
says changed his life? How was NASCAR history made at
Daytona's Boot Hill Saloon? Why did Eddie Gossage (Texas
Motor Speedway president) get fired as a sports writer
during his college days? Racing fans will enjoy these
stories and many more in Along for the Ride.

St. Dale
By Sharyn McCrumb
A NASCAR trip
called the Dale Earnhardt Memorial
Pilgrimage—boarding a silver cruise bus for a tour
of Southern speedways are a group of strangers. None
of the pilgrims ever met Dale Earnhardt, but he
somehow touched each of their lives. For one
18-year-old, the tour is a chance to get married at
the speedway with Earnhardt there in spirit. A New
York stockbroker has made the trip because the love
of stock car racing is the only link he has with the
father he never knew. Reverend Knight agrees to
chaperone a dying child on the tour, and finds
himself on a strangely familiar journey of faith and
devotion, with the prospect of a miracle at hand.
In a novel rich with compassion and truth, Sharyn
McCrumb has crafted a tale of transformation and
everyday miracles. Suffused with incisive Southern
wit and unforgettable characters, St. Dale looks
into the heart of America—its secular saints and
cereal-box heroes, wild dreams and unrealized
ambitions, heartbreaking losses and second
chances—and celebrates its unbreakable spirit.

Mark Donohue – Technical
Excellence at Speed
by Michael Argetsinger
Named Best Book and "Best
of 2009" at the International Automotive Media Awards
To a generation of fans in the 1960s and 1970s, Mark Donohue
embodied a new, uniquely American spirit in motor racing. Donohue
was not only blindingly fast, he was also smart, with a background
in engineering and a unique talent for studying and setting up a
race car. Together with his like-minded team owner, Roger Penske, he
brought a new level of technical sophistication and preparation to
nearly every type of American racing, from sports cars to the
Indianapolis 500.
After years of success in amateur sports-car racing, Donohue’s
professional career took off in 1966 when he drove a factory Ford
GT40 at Le Mans and a Lola T70 for Penske in the Can-Am Challenge.
In 1972 he won the Indy 500, and a year later he captured the Can-Am

MANMADE THUNDER
by Godwin Kelly
MANMADE THUNDER is the new book from Godwin Kelly, widely
acknowledged to be one of the best motorsports journalists in
America. The book examines the sport of stock car racing through the
eyes and ears of the men behind the wheel, the men with the wrenches
in their hands, and those who pay the bills. Alongside the
insightful text are over 250 stunning photographs, including many
from the Don Hunter Collection and The Sharpe Image. The photography
is unique; approximately two thirds of the images in the book have
never been published before.
MANMADE THUNDER takes the reader through a visual and
narrative journey of the sport – from humble beginnings of family
cars raced on dirt tracks, to the glitz and glamour that has made
today’s NASCAR a national phenomenon. The book examines how the
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series has transformed from a purely
performance-based sport into a personality-driven enterprise over
the last two decades. While the main chapters focus on the current
top drivers and past greats, the subchapters cleverly weave former
legends and other aspects of the sport into the narrative. In
addition, exclusive first person sections reveal what the drivers
really think.

FACES OF NASCAR – a Pictorial Salute to America’s Greatest Sport
by
Scott Robinson
The action on the track isn’t the only
story in NASCAR. In a sport that has transcended its "playing field"
to become a cultural phenomenon, NASCAR racing has become as much
about the star driver, the grizzled crew chief, the calculating team
owner, the hard-working pit crew, the skilled hands back at the race
shop, and the die-hard fans as it is about brightly colored cars
speeding by at 200 mph.
Through evocative candid portrait photo-graphy from the lens of
Scott Robinson, Faces of NASCAR explores the full spectrum of people
involved in the Nextel Cup series, from drivers to officials to
spectators. Each subject is photographed in a striking portrait,
with incredible detail. Robinson's simple, yet powerful photographic
portrayals highlight the passion, intensity, and joy these racing
diehards feel when they are spending the weekend at the track.
A must-have for any NASCAR fan, Faces of NASCAR speaks to the human
side of this exciting and fascinating sport through these portraits
as well as commentary from those who love this sport most.

History of San Jose Auto Racing
1903-2007
by Dennis Mattish
The complete history of San Jose auto racing, starting in 1903 –
when Barney Oldfield barnstormed into San Jose to try to set a world
speed record – all the way to the final San Jose Grand Prix held in
2007.
The Foreword is by racing legend Joe Leonard – the only man to win

Cars, Supermodifieds and many more.

have occurred at nearly every local racing event, and it is time for
San Jose to bar any sport which takes so heavy a toll of human
life."
History of San Jose Auto Racing tells the grim and humorous
stories of the drivers and cars, oval tracks, road courses and drag
strips that were part of the San Jose racing scene.

Auto
Racing in Charlotte and the Carolina Piedmont
by Marc P. Singer & Ryan L.
Sumner
Charlotte and the Carolina Piedmont has an extensive and legendary
tradition of automobile racing. Soon after 1904, when the first car
was registered in Charlotte, autos became a part of everyday life.
Car racing was just around the bend: an open-road race was run
through Charlotte as early as 1908.
Many drivers themselves have hailed from the area, and some are said
to have received early training by running moonshine and outrunning
authorities. Probably the best-known aspect of Carolina racing is
the Queen City's involvement since 1949 with NASCAR, which hosts
many of its big names and operations. Auto Racing in Charlotte and
the Carolina Piedmont explores the story behind the various forms of
the sport, the kinds of people who have raced, and the reasons why
they have done so.
Historic photographs-many never before published-trace the history
of NASCAR and look beyond the professional aspect to include the
dragracers, wannabees, kids, and just plain amateurs participating
in this cultural phenomenon. The story includes the first formal
oval track, constructed entirely of wooden planks and opened in
1925.
Other famous Charlotte locations, including professional dirt
tracks, drag strips, and even a paved track dedicated to Soap Box
Derby, are also revisited. Images of fans, mechanics, and hangers-on
round out this singular journey of racing in the Carolinas.

The Legends of Watertown Speedway
By David Stoodley
Other than a permanent record of statistics, the
primary reason for writing this book was to allow race
fans the opportunity to relive the precious moments
that took place at Watertown,NY Speedway and to preserve,
hopefully forever, the histoy of this famous Speedway
and the dauntless men who tried to tame it.
Watertown
Speedway has all but disappeared from the Fairgrounds

SUNDAY MONEY: Speed! Lust! Madness! Death! A Hot Lap Around America
with NASCAR
by Jeff MacGregor
Smart, funny, and profane, Sunday Money is the
kaleidoscopic account of an entire season on the NASCAR circuit.
Driving 48,000 miles in a tiny motorhome, writer Jeff MacGregor and
his wife, an award-winning photographer, covered 36 races at 23
tracks in 18 states, from Daytona to Darlington, New Hampshire to
California, from the Wal-Mart to the Waldorf, profiling the lives of
superstar drivers like Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Tony Stewart, their
crews, and their fans, across the grinding reach of a 40-week
season.
But this is not just a behind-the-scenes chronicle of America's
loudest pastime. It is the story of a hundred stories; of red states
and blue, of splendid Rebel lizards and golden Yankee hotshoes, of
mystic true believers and their holy roll of honored ghosts.
Sunday Money is a snapshot of American culture -- of race,
religion, class, sex, money, politics, and fame -- taken from the
window of a moving car, a brilliantly observed, keenly rendered, and
darkly comic portrait of America.

Janet Guthrie : A
Life at Full Throttle
by Janet Guthrie
In this beautifully written book,
Guthrie tells her story from the beginning, capturing the poignant
detail of the complexity of the racing business both on the track
and off. On a deeper level, she conveys all that she encountered
along the way as a woman in the most testosterone-charged of men's
worlds.
With passion, she details the physical, emotional and intellectual
demands of the sport. She recounts the barriers she overcame in a
business fueled as much by machismo as gasoline, recalling moments
of isolation, dejection and frustration, but also the moments of
sheer joy and exhilaration that marked her journey. And she shares
with readers the adrenaline rush of steering a race car through the
turns at close to 200 miles per hour.

NASCAR’s
Hidden History
by Johnny “Wynn” Lawrence with Keith
and Janice Slack
In this account of the early days in auto racing, Jack “Wynn”
Lawrence believed that NASCAR let him down, as well as other former
Grand National drivers who fell on hard times after making similar
sacrifices. “If they just gave me $200 a month that would make all
the difference in my life.”
For 15 years Lawrence gave everything
to NASCAR. He was in 15 wrecks during his career- and that’s just
the bad ones. NASCAR is the only major sport that doesn’t offer a
pension.
Other former Grand National drivers
who also fell on hard times have somehow become invisible and it
hurts.

Tony
Stewart: True Speed
with Bones Bourcier
The autobiography of the most
charismatic young talent to hit the NASCAR Winston Cup series in
years. NASCAR race driver Tony Stewart embodies the sporting version
of the American Dream: a kid starts essentially nowhere, with
essentially nothing, and rises on talent alone to become a champion.
Today, as a 30-year-old NASCAR Winston Cup star driving for a team
fielded by Hall of Fame football coach Joe Gibbs, Stewart sits
poised on the brink of a brilliant career. Youthful,
candid-sometimes controversially so-and yet quietly charismatic,
Stewart begs the age-old sports question: How far can this kid go?
Never has racing seen so complete an autobiography as TRUE SPEED.
Then again, never has racing seen a young driver like Tony Stewart.

The Nutley Velodrome
by Crocky Wright
This is a book designed for anyone who loves pre-World War II
Midgets.
The Nutley Velodrome was unique in the annals of Midget auto racing.
The track was a wooden bowl, built originally as a bicycle velodrome,
the same type of bowl we see today's Olympic bicycle racers
competing upon. It was only a fifth of a mile in length.
The cars circled the track in about eight seconds, and many a driver
has said Nutley was the most terrifying track ever built.
The banking on this one-of-a-kind arena was 45 degrees, too steep
for a man to walk up!
Author Crocky Wright was in attendance at every race ever held at
Nutley and has recorded the action in a first-person voice that
literally allows you to feel the place shake.
Nutley was open for auto racing for only two years, 1938 and 1939.
The book opens to a full 22" wide and features not only a Class A
Library Binding, but 80 pound paper as well. A fine four-color
illustration graces the cover.

Many stories make

Funny Car
Fever
by Steve Reyes
There wasn’t always a class for these “funny-looking” cars. In the
mid-1960s, many of drag racing’s fastest drivers were outgrowing the
Super Stock and Factory Experimental classes, building cars that
stretched and eventually broke the rules. Promoters discovered they
could pair up these altered-wheelbase, injected, blown machines in
exhibition match races—and the spectators came running. Rivalries
were born, the Funny Car class was created, and the cars kept
getting faster and faster.
Funny Car Fever is a humorous, heart-felt,
first-hand account of the
most exciting and memorable years of the Funny Car class. Steve
Reyes followed these fiberglass-bodied, nitro-burning machines and
their drivers from the years leading into Funny Car class through
its halcyon days. He’s included over 400 of his favorite images and
more than a few never-before-heard stories to bring the feeling of
the class and the era home to you.

Echoes of
Thunder in the Hills
Racing.”

Ryan Newman:
Engineering Speed
By Deb Williams
Ryan Newman grew up in South
Bend, Indiana, and, with encouragement from his parents,
has been racing since the age of four and a half. He
started with quarter midgets, which he describes as
"go-carts with roll cages," moved up into Midgets, and
later, Sprint cars.
The year 2000 marked the successful
debut of Newman's career with Penske Racing. That year
he had six starts: five in the 2000 ARCA Bondo Mar/Hyde
Series and one in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. In 2001
Newman drove a blended "ABC" season -- ARCA Re/Max
Series, Busch Grand National Series, and Winston Cup. In
26 starts he finished in the top-ten on 11 occasions. In
addition, he had one ARCA win and pole, one Busch Series
win and six poles, and the Winston Cup pole at the
All-Star race in Charlotte.
In 2002 Newman drove the
newly-numbered #12 ALLTEL Penske Racing Ford Taurus
full-time in the Winston Cup Series. He finished the
season as the Raybestos Rookie of the Year, with 22
top-10 finishes, six poles, and one regular-season win.
In addition, he won the Winston All-Star race.
Newman
has the brains to go along with his talent at driving
race cars. He completed his degree program in vehicle
structure engineering at Purdue University, where he was
the recipient of the Rich Vogler Memorial Scholarship.

Jeff Gordon:
The NASCAR Superstar's Story
From the Editors of Stock Car Racing
Magazine
When Jeff Gordon burst onto the
NASCAR scene in the early 1990s, he broke the stereotypical mold for
a stock car racing champion. He was young, handsome, articulate,
media-savvy and from California, not from "down South." He has
withstood incredible resistance and tough on-track competition to
become a four-time champion at NASCAR's highest level.
A mix of fresh writing and articles drawn from leading racing
magazines Stock Car Racing and Circle Track create a thorough
profile of Gordon as a racer and as an individual. This book covers
his approach to driving, his team and cars, and his business savvy
as a leading endorser and now a team owner.

Many stories make

The Cruel Sport: Grand Prix Racing 1959-1967
by Robert Daley
Daley captures life of the edge of
the Grand Prix circuit, which in very few ways
resembles the safety conscious environments of F1,
NASCAR, and CART today. In a several year period,
nearly 50% of the drivers that began the season did
not survive it. This was a golden and glorious
period for the sport, but it was also dangerous and
"cruel". The book includes sections covering the
drivers, cars, factories, practice sessions, race
day races and, inevitably, accidents. The text is
incredibly compelling, as would be expected from a
world-class writer. Drivers such as Phil Hill, Jim
Clark, Jack Brabham, Marquis de Portago, Luigi Musso,
Peter Collins, Jean Behra, Enzo Ferrari, Jackie
Stewart, Ricardo Rodriguez, Colin Chapman and others
are all profiled here. A rare period piece certain
to delight racing fans.

Barney OldfieldThe
Life and Times of Americas Legendary Speed King
by William F. Nolan
This book is
the only title ever devoted to Barney Oldfield, the
man who got his start at the turn of the century racing
Fords 999 and winning the Manufacturers
Challenge Cup, at Grosse Pointe, Michigan, on October
25, 1902. He raced his cars against planes and played
chicken with trains, barnstormed the county fairs, and
brawled in saloons. He was the first man to go faster
than a-mile-minute on a dirt oval. He set records at
the dirt tracks and on the beach, raced the road courses
and circled the banked board and brick tracks with the
fastest of the era.
In this full-bodied, colorful account,
William F. Nolan superbly recreates the flavor and raw
tempo of early-day America when Barney Oldfield was
called the Speed King of the World.

Lone Star J.R.: The
Autobiography of Racing Legend Johnny Rutherford
Foreword by A.J. Foyt;
Preface by Mari Hulman
George
With his signature Texas flag painted on his helmet, Johnny
"J.R." Rutherford captured the hearts of racing fans all over the
world during his stellar three-decade career. A versatile driver, he
is world-renowned for his record-breaking successes in the
ultra-competitive world of Indy and Sprint cars. In Lone Star J.R.,
Johnny takes us on an exciting drive through his life and gives us a
behind-the-scenes look at the racing world.
Born in Coffeyville, Kansas, in 1938, John Sherman
Rutherford III did his duty in the U.S. Marine Corps for six years

Kurtis-Kraft: Masterworks
of Speed and Style
By Gordon Eliot White
Working out
of his shop in Glendale, CA, Frank Kurtis changed the
face of American Racing, producing a long string of
innovative midget, Sprint, Champ and Indy cars from
1935 to 1963. This photo history examines the entire
ranges of these Kurtis-Kraft racers with special emphasis
on the 60-plus cars that campaigned during the Indianapolis

During

racers, powered largely by the periods legendary Offenhauser
Engines, won the 500 in an incredible five out of six
years from 1950 to 1955. And at the end of the May classic
in 1956, Kurtis created 21 of 33 cars in the starting
